Shell's origins trace back to 1833, when London shopkeeper Marcus Samuel added imported decorative shells to his antiques business. His sons, Marcus junior and Sam, later expanded into oil trading and commissioned steamers to carry oil in bulk rather than barrels. In 1892, their tanker Murex passed through the Suez Canal, helping reduce the cost of transporting oil to overseas markets. The brothers initially called their business The Tank Syndicate, renaming it the Shell Transport and Trading Company in 1897.
