This striking vintage photograph shows a British woman at work operating industrial machinery during the Second World War, her colleagues visible behind her. As millions of men left for the front, women stepped in to keep Britain's factories running — mastering heavy equipment, precision tools, and industrial processes that had never before been open to them.
By mid-1943, almost 90 per cent of single women and 80 per cent of married women were working in factories, on the land, or in the armed forces. Their skill and determination helped sustain the war effort from the home front.
