Transport 1 - Gas Station Attendants captures British women stepping into roles that had been exclusively male before the war — manning the fuel pumps and keeping Britain's vehicles moving during World War II. From 1941, women were called up for war work in roles such as mechanics, engineers, munitions workers, air raid wardens, and bus and fire engine drivers.

By mid-1943, almost 90 per cent of single women and 80 per cent of married women were working in factories, on the land, or in the armed forces — fuelling the nation in every sense.
