Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) was one of the greatest painters of the Spanish Baroque — celebrated across Europe for his warmth, tenderness, and extraordinary ability to find beauty and dignity in the humblest of subjects. While his religious works brought him fame, it is his paintings of street children that have captured hearts for centuries.
The Young Beggar (La Jeune Mendiante, c. 1650) is one of his most beloved masterpieces. A young boy sits in a shaft of golden light, quietly picking fleas from his shirt — a scene of poverty rendered with such gentleness and humanity that it becomes something deeply moving. There is no pity here, only dignity. Murillo sees this child not as a symbol of misery, but as a full human being, worthy of the same careful attention as any king or saint.
Today it hangs in the Louvre in Paris. Now it can bring that same quiet humanity to your home.
