Jean-Léon Gérôme painted The Cock Fight in 1846, also known as Young Greeks Attending a Cock Fight. Exhibited at the Paris Salon when Gérôme was just 22 years old, it was an immediate sensation and launched his career as one of the most celebrated academic painters of the 19th century. The painting depicts two young Greeks — a boy and a girl — watching their roosters fight, rendered with the crisp, polished technique and classical subject matter that defined the Neo-Grec style.
The work is remarkable for its combination of youthful energy and serene classical beauty — the figures are idealized yet intimate, the setting evocative of ancient Greece. Gérôme would go on to become one of the great Orientalist painters, but The Cock Fight remains one of his most beloved early masterpieces. This museum-quality giclée print captures every luminous detail of Gérôme’s extraordinary technique.
