A Game of Silence
The Card Players (1892–93) is one of Paul Cézanne's most celebrated series — a study in concentration, stillness, and the quiet drama of everyday life. Two figures face each other across a table, absorbed in their game, their forms rendered with the geometric solidity that would make Cézanne the father of modern art. There is no narrative here, no anecdote — only pure pictorial presence.
Cézanne painted five versions of this subject between 1890 and 1895, each one a further distillation of form and atmosphere. This version, with its monumental simplicity and compressed space, is among the most powerful. One of the series was sold in 2011 for a price estimated at up to $300 million — at the time the highest ever paid for a painting — a testament to the enduring power of Cézanne's vision.
About Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations for the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to 20th-century Cubism and abstraction. Picasso and Matisse both called him "the father of us all."
