Dismissed by critics during much of his lifetime, he was championed by Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire, and the Parisian avant-garde, who recognized in his Naïve style a radical authenticity. Today Rousseau is celebrated as one of the great originals of modern art, a direct influence on Surrealism and beyond.
