The Adoration of the Magi – Fra Angelico, c. 1423–1424
Radiant with gold and devotion, Fra Angelico's Adoration of the Magi is a masterpiece of Early Italian Renaissance painting. The Three Kings kneel before the Christ Child in a procession of exquisite detail — jeweled robes, gilded halos, a celestial star — every element rendered with the precision and reverence of a man who believed painting was an act of prayer.
Fra Angelico (c. 1395–1455), born Guido di Pietro and known to his contemporaries as Fra Giovanni Angelico, was a Dominican friar whose art was inseparable from his faith. Vasari wrote of him that "it is impossible to bestow too much praise on this holy father." In 1982, Pope John Paul II proclaimed his beatification, making "Blessed" his official title. His work bridges the medieval tradition of sacred icon painting and the new Renaissance language of perspective and naturalism — suffused throughout with an otherworldly luminosity that remains unmatched.
