Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted his celebrated Sunflowers series in Arles in the summer of 1888, during one of the most creatively explosive periods of his life. He was preparing his Yellow House for the arrival of his friend Paul Gauguin, and he wanted to fill it with paintings of sunflowers — flowers he associated with gratitude, warmth, and the blazing southern sun.
The result is one of the most iconic images in the history of art. Fifteen sunflowers arranged in a simple vase, rendered in every shade of yellow Van Gogh could find — gold, ochre, lemon, amber — against a warm golden background. The flowers are not merely painted; they seem to radiate light from within. Each bloom has its own personality: some open and triumphant, others drooping and spent, all of them alive with Van Gogh’s extraordinary energy and emotion.
Multiple versions exist, held in the National Gallery in London, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. Now this timeless celebration of color and life can brighten your home.
