In the early years of the 20th century, the mountains of the French Alps were being transformed. What had once been the preserve of hardy alpinists and local shepherds was becoming the playground of a new kind of traveler — the winter sports enthusiast. And the key to unlocking the Alps was the railway.

The Chemin de Fer du Mont-Blanc was one of the great mountain railway lines of France, winding up through the Haute-Savoie to bring tourists to the foot of Mont Blanc — the highest peak in the Alps and in all of Western Europe. Its principal destination, Chamonix, had already established itself as the capital of Alpine adventure, and in 1924 it made history as the site of the first Winter Olympics — a moment that announced winter sports to the entire world.

French railway companies were among the most enthusiastic patrons of poster art during the Belle Époque and interwar years, commissioning some of the most beautiful travel posters ever made. These images — bold, luminous, and irresistibly inviting — sold not just a train ticket but a dream: crisp mountain air, gleaming snow, and the exhilaration of skiing, skating, and climbing in one of the most spectacular landscapes on earth.

A magnificent piece of French Alpine travel poster art — capturing the golden age of winter sports and the railways that made them possible.
