A Raw Vision of the Self
In Self-Portrait with Nude Shoulder (1914), Egon Schiele turns his unflinching gaze inward — exposing not just flesh but psychological intensity. The bare shoulder emerges from the frame with deliberate vulnerability, the angular lines and taut contours that define Schiele's unmistakable style transforming a simple self-portrait into a charged statement of identity and raw emotion.
Painted at the height of his Expressionist power, this work captures Schiele at 24 — already a master of the human form, already redefining what portraiture could mean. Where others idealized, Schiele excavated.
About Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was one of the most radical figurative artists of the early 20th century. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, he pushed Expressionism to its emotional and physical limits — his twisted forms, raw sexuality, and relentless self-examination making him one of the most compelling and controversial artists of his era. He died at just 28, leaving behind a body of work of extraordinary intensity.
