La Source is one of the most celebrated and serene nudes in the history of Western painting — a vision of ideal feminine beauty rendered with the cool, flawless perfection that only Ingres could achieve. A young woman stands against a dark background, tilting a tall ewer from which a stream of water flows — she is herself the source, the embodiment of purity, grace, and natural abundance.
Ingres began the painting around 1820 and returned to it decades later, completing it in 1856 with the assistance of two pupils. The result is a work of extraordinary refinement: the figure's contours are drawn with a precision and sensuality that recalls the Italian Renaissance masters Ingres so deeply admired, while the surface is polished to an almost porcelain smoothness. It is a painting that seems to exist outside of time.
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was the supreme master of the French Neoclassical tradition — a draughtsman of incomparable skill and a painter whose devotion to ideal beauty produced some of the most technically perfect works in the history of art.
This fine art print is reproduced on premium luster photo paper, capturing the luminous color and flawless refinement of Ingres's original with exceptional fidelity.
