Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was one of the most distinctive voices of French Impressionism — a painter who brought a sharp, almost architectural eye to the streets, rooftops, and everyday life of Paris. More realist than his contemporaries, he captured the city with a clarity and depth that feels strikingly modern even today.
Rooftops Covered by Snow (Toits sous la neige, 1878) is one of his most beloved works. Painted from a high vantage point overlooking the Parisian rooftops after a winter snowfall, it transforms the familiar cityscape into something hushed, still, and almost otherworldly. The soft grey sky, the weight of snow on the chimney pots, the quiet emptiness — it is a painting that makes you feel the cold and the silence of a winter morning in Paris.
Today it is held in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Now it can bring that same quiet beauty to your home.
