Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was the supreme master of French Rococo painting — a painter of irresistible charm, lightness, and sensuality whose canvases seem to shimmer with the pleasure and elegance of 18th-century France. In a career of extraordinary productivity, he created over 550 paintings that captured the spirit of the Ancien Régime at its most refined and joyful.
Psyché montrant à ses sœurs les présents de l’Amour — Psyche showing her sisters the gifts of Cupid — is one of his most enchanting mythological works. Drawn from the ancient tale of Psyche and Eros, it depicts the moment when the beautiful Psyche, showered with gifts by her invisible divine lover, shares her joy with her sisters. Fragonard renders the scene with his characteristic luminosity and grace: soft, glowing flesh tones, billowing drapery, and an atmosphere of pure, radiant happiness.
Today it is held in the National Gallery in London. Now it can bring that same Rococo warmth and elegance to your home.
