The Weight of Fruit
Pommes et Oranges (Apples and Oranges, 1895) is one of Paul Cézanne's most iconic still lifes — a composition of extraordinary richness in which fruit, fabric, and ceramic are arranged with the same monumental seriousness he brought to his landscapes and portraits. The apples and oranges glow against the swirling drapery, each object rendered with a solidity and presence that transcends mere representation.
Cézanne famously said he wanted to "treat nature by the cylinder, the sphere, the cone" — and nowhere is this ambition more fully realised than in his still lifes. The props in this painting are still to be found in his studio in Aix-en-Provence, exactly as he left them: a reminder that for Cézanne, these humble objects were as worthy of sustained attention as any grand historical subject.
About Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations for the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to 20th-century Cubism and abstraction. Picasso and Matisse both called him "the father of us all."
