Long before yogurt conquered the world, France had its own beloved fresh cheese: the Petit Suisse. Small, creamy, and wrapped in paper, it became one of the most popular dairy products in 19th-century France — and the brand behind it, Gervais, became a household name across the country.
The story of Petit Suisse begins in Normandy around 1850, when a Swiss cowherd working on a French farm suggested adding cream to fresh cheese to make it richer and smoother. The result was an instant success. Charles Gervais (1830–1892), a visionary Parisian cheese merchant, recognized its potential and set up his dairy operation in Gournay-en-Bray, Normandy — the heart of French cream country. He industrialized the production of fresh cream cheeses at a time when most dairy was still purely local and artisanal, building distribution networks and investing in branding decades before that was common practice. He was, in essence, one of France's first modern food entrepreneurs.
His company eventually merged with others and evolved into what became part of the Danone group — making Gervais a direct ancestor of one of the world's largest food companies today. This charming vintage advertising poster captures the warmth and wholesomeness of that founding era — a perfect piece for lovers of French culinary history, vintage packaging art, and the golden age of European food culture.
