The Olive Grove — Vincent van Gogh, 1889
Among the most meditative works of Van Gogh's turbulent final years, The Olive Grove was painted during his voluntary stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Surrounded by ancient olive trees, Van Gogh found in them an endlessly fascinating subject — their gnarled, twisting forms and shimmering silver-green foliage became a vehicle for his most expressive brushwork.
Between June and December 1889, Van Gogh produced fifteen olive grove paintings, each one a passionate investigation of color, light, and movement. He wrote to his brother Theo that the olive trees were "characteristic of the country" and that he was determined to capture their essence. The result is a series of works that pulse with life — the trees seem to breathe, their branches reaching and swaying across the canvas.
