Moulin Rouge: La Goulue, 1891 - Toulouse-Lautrec

In 1891, the director of the newly opened Moulin Rouge had a problem. The cabaret had burst onto the Montmartre scene just two years earlier, in 1889, and was already the most talked-about venue in Paris — but its existing poster, designed by Jules Chéret, felt too tame for the electric energy inside. He needed something bolder. He turned to a young, unknown artist of just 27 years old: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

The result was one of the most iconic posters in the history of graphic art. Toulouse-Lautrec captured La Goulue — Louise Weber, the Moulin Rouge’s most celebrated cancan dancer, known for her wild energy and provocative style — mid-performance, her skirts flying, surrounded by the silhouetted crowd. In the foreground, the elongated shadow of her dance partner Valentin le Désossé cuts across the composition with startling modernity. The poster was plastered across the walls of Paris overnight and made both the Moulin Rouge and Toulouse-Lautrec famous.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) was born into French aristocracy in Albi but found his world in the cabarets, dance halls, and brothels of Montmartre. Deeply influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the Impressionism of Edgar Degas, he revolutionized the art of the lithographic poster, elevating commercial advertising into fine art. His works — including At the Moulin Rouge, Jane Avril, and Aristide Bruant — remain among the most recognizable images of the Belle Époque.
