Moulin de la Galette - Montmartre, Paris, Belle Époque

Perched near the summit of Montmartre, the Moulin de la Galette is one of the most beloved and painted landmarks in all of Paris. A windmill with roots stretching back to the 17th century, it became famous in the 19th century not just for milling grain, but for the galette — a rustic brown bread — sold by the Debray family who owned it for generations.

By the 1880s, the Moulin de la Galette had transformed into something far more magical: an open-air guinguette, a popular Parisian dance hall where working-class Parisians gathered on Sunday afternoons to dance, drink, and celebrate life. It was this scene — sun-dappled, joyful, and utterly Parisian — that captivated the great painters of the age. Pierre-Auguste Renoir immortalized it in his masterpiece Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876), and Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Pablo Picasso all painted the windmill and its surroundings during their time in Montmartre.
