Saint-Antoine Agressed by the Devils is one of the most extraordinary works of 15th-century art — a breathtaking engraving in which the hermit Saint Anthony is seized and tormented by a writhing swarm of fantastical demons, dragged into the air by creatures of nightmare. Every inch of the composition teems with invention: clawed, winged, scaled, and horned monsters crowd around the saint, who endures his ordeal with serene dignity at the center of the chaos.
The work is a tour de force of the engraver's art — the density of line, the variety of texture, and the sheer imaginative energy of the creatures make it one of the most technically and visually astonishing prints ever made. It famously captivated the young Michelangelo, who copied it in paint as a teenager — one of the earliest known works of the great master.
Martin Schongauer (c. 1448–1491) was the greatest German engraver of the 15th century, whose mastery of line and form set the standard for printmaking in Northern Europe and profoundly influenced the generation of artists that followed, including Albrecht Dürer.
This fine art print is reproduced on premium luster photo paper, capturing the extraordinary detail and dramatic intensity of Schongauer's original with exceptional fidelity.
