La Légion d'Honneur
Founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Légion d'Honneur is France's highest order of merit, awarded to civilians and soldiers alike for exceptional service to the French Republic. Born from the ideals of the Revolution — which had abolished all royal orders of chivalry — Napoleon sought to create a new form of recognition based on merit rather than nobility.
The order's distinctive red ribbon and star-shaped medal have become enduring symbols of French excellence, courage, and distinction. From artists and scientists to military heroes and heads of state, the Légion d'Honneur has been bestowed upon some of the most remarkable figures in history.
This vintage poster celebrates one of the world's most prestigious honors and a defining emblem of French culture and identity.
