A Detail of Monumental Devotion

This detail from the San Zeno Altarpiece (c. 1455) reveals the extraordinary precision and grandeur of one of Andrea Mantegna's greatest achievements. Commissioned for the Basilica of San Zeno in Verona, the altarpiece is a landmark of Italian Renaissance art — a triptych of breathtaking scale and ambition in which Mantegna fuses his mastery of perspective, his deep knowledge of classical antiquity, and his sculptural approach to form into a unified vision of sacred majesty.

In this detail, Mantegna's characteristic qualities are fully on display: the architectural setting drawn from classical antiquity, the figures rendered with a monumental solidity, the space constructed with a rigorous perspectival logic that draws the viewer into the sacred scene. The San Zeno Altarpiece was painted shortly after Mantegna's celebrated fresco cycle in Padua, and uses many of the same revolutionary techniques.

About Andrea Mantegna

Andrea Mantegna (c. 1431–1506) was an Italian Renaissance painter and engraver, court artist to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His pioneering use of perspective and his integration of classical antiquity into Christian subjects made him one of the most influential artists of the 15th century.
