L'Angélus — Jean-François Millet, 1857–1859

Painted between 1857 and 1859, L'Angélus is Jean-François Millet's most beloved and iconic work. Two peasant farmers pause in their potato field at the sound of the distant church bell ringing the Angelus prayer, bowing their heads in quiet devotion. Jean-François Millet (1814–1875) was a co-founder of the Barbizon School and one of the defining figures of French Realism.
