The Virgin, the Child, and the Angels
La Vierge et l'Enfant avec les Chérubins (The Virgin and Child with Cherubs, 1485) is one of Andrea Mantegna's most tender and intimate devotional works — a composition in which the monumental gravity of his style gives way to something warmer and more personal. The Christ Child is held by the Virgin with quiet maternal tenderness, while cherubs crowd the upper register, their soft forms a gentle counterpoint to Mantegna's characteristic sculptural precision.
Painted during a period of renewed artistic activity at the Gonzaga court in Mantua, this work reflects Mantegna's deepening mastery of devotional imagery — his ability to combine the grandeur of the Renaissance with an intimacy that speaks directly to the viewer across five centuries.
