The Virgin of Victory
La Vierge de la Victoire (The Virgin of Victory, 1496) is one of Andrea Mantegna's most magnificent altarpieces — a triumphant sacred composition commissioned by Francesco II Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua, to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Fornovo. The Virgin and Child are enthroned in glory, surrounded by saints in a richly decorated architectural setting, the whole suffused with the jewel-like precision and monumental gravity that define Mantegna's art.
Now in the Louvre, this painting represents Mantegna at the height of his powers — his mastery of perspective, his sculptural treatment of form, and his integration of classical and Christian imagery all working in perfect harmony. Baldassare Castiglione ranked Mantegna alongside Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael as one of the supreme masters of the Renaissance, a judgment that time has only confirmed.
About Andrea Mantegna
Andrea Mantegna (c. 1431–1506) was an Italian Renaissance painter and engraver, court artist to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His pioneering use of perspective and his integration of classical antiquity into Christian subjects made him one of the most influential artists of the 15th century.
