La Vénus d'Urbino (Venus of Urbino) – Titian, 1538
Sensuous, self-assured, and utterly captivating, Titian's Venus of Urbino is one of the most celebrated nudes in the history of Western art. A young woman reclines on a luxurious bed, her gaze meeting the viewer's with calm, direct confidence. In the background, two maids attend to a chest of clothes, grounding the mythological subject in the warmth of everyday Venetian life. Every detail — the rumpled sheets, the sleeping dog, the rose petals in her hand — speaks of beauty, intimacy, and quiet power.
Painted in 1538 for Guidobaldo della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, the work draws on Giorgione's earlier Sleeping Venus but transforms it entirely: where Giorgione's goddess sleeps, Titian's is awake, present, and commanding. The painting went on to inspire generations of artists, from Manet's Olympia to Goya's Maja Desnuda. Today it hangs at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, one of the jewels of the collection.
