Maurice de Vlaminck (1876–1958) was one of the great Fauvist masters — a painter who wielded color like a weapon, transforming the quiet landscapes of the Île-de-France into blazing, electric visions of pure feeling. His landscapes are among the most viscerally powerful in modern art.
La Vallée de Port-Marly captures the gentle valley of Port-Marly, a small commune in the Yvelines just west of Paris on the banks of the Seine — a landscape beloved by the Impressionists before him, painted by Sisley and Pissarro in the previous generation. In Vlaminck’s hands, the same countryside becomes something altogether wilder: the colors intensified, the brushwork urgent, the sky alive with movement. It is a landscape seen not with the eye alone, but with the whole body.
A magnificent example of Fauvism at its most expressive and alive — perfect for any lover of modern French art.
