La Mélancolie – Constance Marie Charpentier, 1801

A young woman sits alone in a misty landscape, her gaze lost in thought, her posture heavy with quiet sorrow. Painted in 1801, La Mélancolie is the most celebrated work of Constance Marie Charpentier — a French Neoclassical painter long overshadowed by her male contemporaries, and long overdue for recognition.

Charpentier (1767–1849) studied in the circle of Jacques-Louis David and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1795 to 1819, winning a gold medal in 1814. Her portraits and genre scenes — intimate, psychologically acute, and technically masterful — place her among the finest painters of her era.
