La Femme aux Chrysanthèmes – Edgar Degas, 1865
One of Degas's most daring compositions: a woman sits at the far right of the canvas, her chin resting on her hand, her gaze distant and inward — while an enormous, exuberant bouquet of chrysanthemums dominates the entire left side of the painting. It is a radical act of framing, almost photographic in its asymmetry, and utterly unlike anything painted before it.
Completed in 1865, this work marks a pivotal moment in Degas's career — the point where he began to push portraiture and still life into entirely new territory. The tension between the quiet woman and the explosive flowers is unforgettable.
