La Dolce Vita — Marcello Mastroianni & Anita Ekberg, 1960
Directed by Federico Fellini, La Dolce Vita — Italian for "the sweet life" — is one of the most celebrated films in cinema history. Set in Rome, it follows Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), a charming but restless journalist drifting through the glamour, excess, and emptiness of Roman high society over seven days and nights.
The film's most iconic scene — Anita Ekberg wading through the Trevi Fountain in a black evening gown, beckoning Marcello to join her — has become one of the most unforgettable images ever captured on film. Ekberg's magnetic presence as the Swedish-American actress Sylvia perfectly embodies the seductive but hollow world Fellini portrays.
La Dolce Vita won the Palme d'Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Costumes. It remains a timeless portrait of beauty, longing, and the search for meaning.
