Joyeux Farceurs — Henri Rousseau, 1906

Painted in 1906, Joyeux Farceurs (The Merry Jesters) is one of Henri Rousseau's most playful and enchanting jungle compositions. A group of exotic animals — monkeys and other creatures — frolic among the dense tropical foliage, their expressions animated with a mischievous glee that gives the painting its name. As always with Rousseau, the jungle is a place of wonder rather than menace — lush, impossibly detailed, and suffused with a warm, golden light that feels more like paradise than wilderness.

Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), the beloved self-taught master known as "Le Douanier," created his celebrated jungle scenes without ever having visited a tropical country, drawing inspiration from botanical gardens, illustrated magazines, and the vivid landscapes of his own imagination. Championed by Picasso and the Parisian avant-garde, Rousseau's work is now recognized as a cornerstone of modern art. Joyeux Farceurs is held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
