Johnny Come Lately — James Cagney, 1943
Directed by William K. Howard, Johnny Come Lately is a charming departure from the gangster roles that made Cagney a star. He plays Tom Richards, a roving drifter who arrives in the small town of Plattsville in 1906 and finds himself defending an elderly newspaper publisher — the idealistic Vinnie McLeod (Grace George) — against corrupt local powers.
A rare glimpse of Cagney in a gentler, more idealistic mode. James Cagney, born in New York City in 1899, won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984.
