This fascinating vintage photograph captures British women doing carpentry during World War II. Women played a crucial part in Britain’s success in the Second World War — after millions of men went to the front line, women took up jobs traditionally meant for men. They spearheaded the evacuation of children and the elderly whenever British cities were targeted by enemy forces, and many took up military roles fighting side by side with men.
As author Kathryn J. Atwood wrote in Women Heroes of World War II:
“…most of these women — the famous and the obscure — had one thing in common: they did not think of themselves as heroes. They followed their consciences, saw something that needed to be done, and they did it. And all of them helped win a war, even though many of them paid the ultimate price for their contribution.”
