This remarkable vintage photograph captures British women building planes during World War II. Millions of women chose to work in factories producing ammunition, uniforms, weapons, and even aircraft. They worked long hours each day, many living close to the factories. Skilled women earned £2.15 a week — while unskilled men earned double. In 1943, women at the Rolls Royce factory went on strike, were pelted with rotten eggs and declared unpatriotic — yet they prevailed, winning wages to match those of semi-skilled male workers.

As author Kathryn J. Atwood wrote in Women Heroes of World War II:

“…most of these women — the famous and the obscure — had one thing in common: they did not think of themselves as heroes. They followed their consciences, saw something that needed to be done, and they did it. And all of them helped win a war, even though many of them paid the ultimate price for their contribution.”

Printed on luster premium photo paper, this reproduction is a powerful tribute to the women who built Britain’s air force.
