This dramatic vintage photograph captures British women stacking bombs during World War II. Around 950,000 British women worked in munitions factories, making weapons like shells and bullets. The work was often well-paid but gruelling — long hours sometimes up to seven days a week, with serious risks from dangerous machinery and highly explosive materials.

As author Kathryn J. Atwood wrote in Women Heroes of World War II:

“…most of these women — the famous and the obscure — had one thing in common: they did not think of themselves as heroes. They followed their consciences, saw something that needed to be done, and they did it. And all of them helped win a war, even though many of them paid the ultimate price for their contribution.”
