Don Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zúñiga (c. 1787–1788) is one of Goya's most enchanting and subtly unsettling portraits — a vision of childhood innocence shadowed by the darker forces of the world. The young boy, dressed in a brilliant scarlet suit, holds a magpie on a string; at his feet, two cats watch the bird with predatory intensity, while a cage of finches stands nearby. The child gazes out at us with wide, trusting eyes, entirely unaware of the menace that surrounds him.

Goya's genius here is to paint a picture of perfect innocence and perfect danger simultaneously. The scarlet of the boy's suit blazes against the dark background with extraordinary force; the cats' eyes gleam with barely suppressed hunger. It is a portrait of a child, and also a meditation on vulnerability, on the fragility of innocence in a world full of hidden threats.

Francisco Goya (1746–1828) was the greatest Spanish painter of his age — a portraitist of devastating psychological insight, and a visionary whose work anticipated the darkest currents of modern art.

This fine art print is reproduced on premium luster photo paper, capturing the luminous color and psychological depth of Goya's original with exceptional fidelity.
