This evocative vintage photograph documents the vital role of the British Women’s Land Army (WLA) during World War II. After Germany declared war, women were enlisted to work the land — by August 1940, about 7,000 women had joined. With German U-boats blockading British supply routes, Churchill feared the country would starve, and called on women to choose between working in factories or on farms to keep Britain fed.

As author Kathryn J. Atwood wrote in Women Heroes of World War II:

“…most of these women — the famous and the obscure — had one thing in common: they did not think of themselves as heroes. They followed their consciences, saw something that needed to be done, and they did it. And all of them helped win a war, even though many of them paid the ultimate price for their contribution.”

Printed on luster premium photo paper, this reproduction is a powerful tribute to the Land Girls who kept Britain from starving.
