Abraham Mignon (1640–1679) was one of the finest flower painters of the Dutch Golden Age — a master of the sumptuous, jewel-like still life that made Dutch painting the envy of Europe. Trained from the age of seven under the great flower painter Jacob Marrel, and later under Jan Davidszoon de Heem in Utrecht, he developed a technique of extraordinary refinement and sensory richness.
Flowers in a Crystal Vase is a breathtaking example of his art at its peak. Roses, tulips, poppies, and morning glories tumble from a gleaming crystal vase with an almost overwhelming abundance — each petal rendered with microscopic precision, each dewdrop catching the light. Insects nestle among the blooms, a bird’s nest peeks from the shadows, and the cool transparency of the crystal vase reflects the world around it. It is a painting that rewards long, slow looking — the more you look, the more you find.
