Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was one of the most passionate and visionary painters who ever lived — a man who threw himself into color and light with an intensity that was almost physical. In the south of France, under the blazing Provençal sun, his palette exploded into the vivid, electric hues that would define his greatest works.
In June 1888, Van Gogh made a 30-mile journey from Arles to the small fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the Mediterranean coast. Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries was painted during that week-long stay — a burst of pure joy in color and movement. The bold, flat shapes of the boats, their vivid reds, greens, and blues against the shimmering sea, the restless energy of Van Gogh’s brushwork — everything here vibrates with life. It is one of the most joyful paintings he ever made.
Today it is held in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Now it can bring that same burst of Mediterranean color and energy to your home.
