Jean-Frédéric Bazille (1841–1870) was one of the most gifted painters of the French Impressionist circle — a close friend of Monet, Renoir, and Sisley, and a generous patron who supported his fellow artists in their early years. Tragically, he died at just twenty-eight on the battlefield of the Franco-Prussian War, leaving behind a small but luminous body of work.
Family Reunion (1867) is considered his masterpiece. Painted in the sun-dappled gardens of his family estate in Montpellier, it brings together fourteen members of the Bazille family in a scene of quiet, dignified togetherness. The painting is remarkable for its clarity of light, its monumental composition, and the tender individuality Bazille gives to each figure — a rare achievement for a painter so young.
Today it hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Now it can hang in your home.
