Journal des Demoiselles # 4109, Paris Fashion - Founder Jeanne-Justine Fouqueau de Pussy

Le Journal des Demoiselles (1833–1922) was one of the most beloved French fashion magazines of the 19th century — devoted entirely to the young women of Paris and their world of elegance, refinement, and style.

Founded in February 1833 by Madame Jeanne-Justine Fouqueau de Pussy (1786–1864) and established at 14, rue Drouot in Paris, it appeared until 1864 in two editions — one illustrated, one not. By 1865 it had grown to four editions: chamois (monthly), violet, blue, and green (bi-monthly), with an orange weekly edition added from 1869. That same year, the journal absorbed the Petit courrier des dames, and some issues appeared under the combined title Journal des demoiselles et Petit courrier des dames.

In October and December 1870, exceptional issues were published under the title Petit courrier des dames et Journal des demoiselles réunis, some in miniature format. The violet edition did not appear from 1872 to 1904; the orange edition became the white edition from 1881. In 1902 the journal absorbed La Jeune fille de Bruxelles, and in 1913 the Parisian journal La Lecture.

Aimed at girls aged 14 to 18 from affluent families, Le Journal des Demoiselles devoted itself primarily to literature, fashion, and theatre. In 1863, the Thiéry family, owners of the journal, launched a version for younger children: La poupée modèle, journal des petites filles.
