Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930) was one of America’s most celebrated historical painters, named by his father in honor of the great French master Jean-Léon Gérôme. Dame Players, painted in 1859, reflects his early Orientalist influences — elegant figures engaged in a refined parlor game, rendered with the polished technique and attention to period detail that would define his career.
Ferris is best known for his monumental series The Pageant of a Nation — 78 scenes from American history, the largest such series ever created by a single artist. But his earlier genre paintings like Dame Players reveal a painter of great charm and technical accomplishment, capturing the grace and intimacy of 19th century social life. This museum-quality giclée print faithfully reproduces every detail of Ferris’s refined brushwork and warm palette.
