Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted Cows in July 1890 during the last weeks of his life, while staying in Auvers-sur-Oise under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet. It was a period of extraordinary creative intensity — Van Gogh produced over 70 paintings in 70 days, pouring everything he had into the fields, skies, and rural life of the French countryside.
Based on a lithograph by the Dutch painter Paulus Potter, Cows is a deeply earthy, grounded work — a striking contrast to the swirling skies and electric colors of his most famous paintings. Three cows stand in a lush green field, rendered with Van Gogh’s characteristic bold outlines and vibrant, expressive brushwork. There is a quiet solidity here, a rootedness in the land, that feels almost like a farewell to the natural world he loved so deeply.
He died just weeks after completing it. Today it is held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille. Now it can bring that same raw, vital energy to your home.
