A couple dancing at night in a Paris street, 1940s. No stage, no ballroom, just the pavement and whatever music carried down the block.

In 1940s Paris, dancing in the street meant something. Public dance halls were shut or restricted under the Occupation, and the bals clandestins went on behind closed doors at real risk. When the city was liberated in August 1944, that pent-up joy poured straight out into the open, and Parisians danced on the cobblestones, at crossroads, under windows still taped against blast. For years afterward, the bals populaires of 14 July kept the habit alive, with accordions on street corners and couples turning in the middle of the road.
