Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923) was a Swiss-born French painter, illustrator, and printmaker who became one of the defining voices of Montmartre’s golden age. A passionate lover of cats, the poor, and the street life of Paris, he brought warmth, wit, and deep humanity to everything he drew. His work appeared in the cabarets, the cafes, and on the walls of the city itself.
Chat Couché — the reclining cat — is one of Steinlen’s most tender works. With a few masterful lines and a palette of warm, earthy tones, he captures the absolute contentment of a cat at rest: the curve of the body, the softness of the fur, the complete and utter indifference to the world. It is a small painting full of quiet joy.
For cat lovers and art lovers alike, this is a print that brings a smile every time you look at it.
