Charlie Chaplin and Gandhi in London

On 22nd September 1931, two of the most iconic figures of the 20th century came face to face on Beckton Road in London's East End. Charlie Chaplin, the world's most beloved comedian, met Mahatma Gandhi, the spiritual leader of India's independence movement — and hundreds of people gathered in the streets just to catch a glimpse of them.

It was an unlikely encounter between laughter and nonviolence, between Hollywood and the spinning wheel. Chaplin reportedly asked Gandhi why he was so opposed to machinery, and Gandhi — who had never seen a Chaplin film — explained his vision of a self-sufficient India. The two parted with deep mutual respect.
