Cemetery of the Church of Ste. Marguerite, Paris

Tucked behind the bustling rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the cemetery of the Church of Sainte-Marguerite holds some of the darkest secrets of Revolutionary Paris. In June 1794, it received the bodies of 73 victims guillotined at the Place de la Bastille — among the last to fall before the Terror finally ended.

Most haunting of all is the grave said to hold Louis XVII, the young dauphin who died in the Temple prison in 1795 at the age of ten. Whether the child buried here was truly the son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette remains one of history's most debated mysteries — bones exhumed in 1846 only deepened the controversy.
