The Last Landscapes

Bank of the Oise at Auvers (1890) was painted in the final weeks of Vincent van Gogh's life, during his time at Auvers-sur-Oise — a small village north of Paris where he had come under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet. The river Oise winds through the composition with a restless energy that feels deeply personal: the water alive, the sky pressing down, the landscape charged with an emotion that goes beyond mere scenery.

These late Auvers paintings represent Van Gogh at his most liberated — the brushwork looser, the colour more intense, the sense of urgency palpable. They are among the most moving works in the history of art: landscapes that are also self-portraits, nature seen through a consciousness of extraordinary sensitivity and fragility.

About Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work — bold in colour, expressive in line, and searingly emotional — had a profound influence on 20th-century art. He produced over 2,100 artworks in just over a decade, largely unrecognised in his lifetime and now among the most celebrated in the world.
