The Adoration of the Shepherds – Georges de La Tour, c. 1644
In near-total darkness, a single candle illuminates the face of the newborn Christ Child. The shepherds lean in, their faces carved from shadow and light, their expressions hushed with wonder. There is no drama, no celestial fanfare — only stillness, warmth, and the quiet miracle of a flame held in the night.
Georges de La Tour (1593–1652) was a French Baroque painter who worked in the Duchy of Lorraine and became one of the supreme masters of candlelit chiaroscuro. Largely forgotten after his death, he was rediscovered in the 20th century and is now recognized as one of the most original and spiritually powerful painters of the Baroque era. His nocturnal religious scenes achieve an intimacy and silence that few artists in history have matched.
