Adoration of St. Vincent — Nuno Gonçalves, c. 1470
Nuno Gonçalves (flourished 1450–1472) is recognized as one of the genuine masters of the 15th century and the founder of the Portuguese school of painting. His monumental altarpiece depicting the Adoration of St. Vincent — the patron saint of Lisbon and the royal house of Portugal — is a landmark of Iberian art, remarkable for its extraordinary realism, psychological depth, and the sheer number of individualized portraits it contains.
Appointed court painter to King Afonso V of Portugal in 1450, Gonçalves worked at the height of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. Yet for nearly 400 years, his name was lost to history — his altarpiece disappeared until its rediscovery in 1882 at the Convent of São Vicente in Lisbon. It was not until 1931, when the work was exhibited in Paris, that Gonçalves finally received the international recognition he deserved.
Now housed in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon, this masterpiece is a must for any lover of Renaissance and early European painting. Printed on premium luster photo paper, this museum-quality reproduction brings its rich detail and solemn grandeur into your home.
